    The renewable fuel

Net-zero transportation

Today, the global transportation sector meets more than 90% of its energy demand with the combustion of fossil fuels. While e-mobility and fuel cell solutions can effectively decarbonize urban and medium distance transportation, existing vehicles as well as airplanes, vessels, and truck fleets will continue to rely on fuels for the decades to come.

Renewable synthetic fuels (“e-Fuel”) produced from captured CO2 and water substitutes fossil-based gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, and effectively reduces transportation emissions.

Power-to-liquid

The superior production pathway for e-Fuels is the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process. Using proprietary PtL know-how, game-changing SOEC based co-electrolysis technology and advanced Fischer-Tropsch reactors, Sunfire has developed a fully integrated solution to produce e-Fuels.

Process e-Fuel production

Core advantages

+ Carbon-neutrality: By utilizing CO2 that has been previously released, Power-to-Liquid closes the carbon cycle

+ Electrical efficiency: Reusing heat and off-gas from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for co-electrolysis (Sunfire-SynLink) reduces electricity demand

Infrastructure integration: Due to similar chemical properties as crude oil, renewable crude can be processed in existing refinery infrastructures

Product quality: The use of pure feedstocks leads to a superior quality of e-Fuel compared to fossil fuels, e.g. no sulphur content, reduced NOX emissions

Scalability: PtL can be used to produce a wide variety of end-products that enable decarbonization transportation

Applications

e-Fuel is the sustainable solution for the aviation, maritime, and road transport. It will make a major contribution to the decarbonization of transportation across the globe, without requiring adaptions of existing fleets.

e-Fuel for Aviation

Aviation

Today, airlines consume massive amounts of fossil jet fuel to move people around the globe, emitting hundreds of million tons of CO2 per year. e-Fuel will enable climate-neutral flying by utilizing captured CO2 and water as feedstocks to produce a fully renewable jet fuel. The global jet fuel certification scheme ASTM already accepts a blending of 50 % e-Fuel with conventional kerosene. Thus, e-Fuel can be used in every airplane – already today.

e-Fuel for logistics and cruises

Maritime

Despite a rapid expected increase in global trade, logistics and cruises, the shipping industry aims at reducing GHG emissions by 50 % until the year 2050. To meet climate targets, e-Fuel produced from captured CO2, water and renewable electricity is key to effectively reduce carbon emissions of vessel fleets – without requiring high investments to switch propulsion technologies.

Current Projects

Sunfire realizes end-to-end PtL-projects with strong partners. Norsk e-Fuel is our first flagship project and more are already under development.

Norsk e-Fuel

Norsk e-Fuel is a Norwegian project developer aiming to industrialize the production of the Power-to-Liquid processes. The first project will be implemented in Mosjøen, Northern Norway and will produce 50 million liters of renewable, fossil-free fuels to decarbonize the aviation industry.
