Sunfire GmbH has joined the European Hydrogen Initiative. Andreas Frömmel, Sunfire’s VP Sales & Marketing, has signed the declaration at “Charge for Change: Innovative Technologies for Energy Intensive Industries” held in Linz, Austria, this week. The goal of the initiative, which has been joined by leading European enterprises, is to establish green hydrogen in the decarbonisation of energy systems and, furthermore, to ensure long-term energy security. By signing the declaration, the EU’s energy ministers, intensify their efforts in reaching the climate goals laid out in the Paris Agreement.

“The goals of the European Hydrogen Initiative perfectly coincide with what Sunfire offers its clients: we connect areas such as chemistry, energy and mobility in order to bring renewable energy to where it’s needed when it’s needed,” explains Andreas Frömmel, VP Sales & Marketing at Sunfire. “Our technologies transform renewable hydrogen into a versatile energy source. The initiative is a poignant statement by the European Union.”

Having established and commercialised steam electrolysis (SOEC) for a highly efficient generation of green hydrogen, Sunfire is regarded as a global pioneer in the field. Their technology, developed in Dresden, Saxony, allows energy intensive industrial enterprises to generate their own green hydrogen using renewable energies. An example of this is the EU-funded (FCH-JU) GrinHy-Project, run in collaboration with the steel producer Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. Sunfire has also delivered one of the world’s largest electrolysers to Boeing in the United States und produces green hydrogen for TOTAL Germany’s hydrogen service station in Karlsruhe.

Sunfire were the first to use steam electrolysis to produce the synthetic fossil fuel substitute e-Crude on an industrial scale. In refineries, e-Crude can be processed to produce environmentally friendly petrol, diesel and kerosene as well as waxes for the chemistry industry. In partnership with the Norwegian company Nordic Blue Crude AS, the first commercial plant for the generation of e-Crude will be developed in Norway in the coming years.
