The expansion of electric mobility and increased generation and use of wind and solar energy represent important steps forward – but they do not add up to a true revolution in the energy sector. The reason is that only a quarter of the energy we consume takes the form of electricity. A bridge between the energy, mobility and gas/heat supply sectors is therefore required if we are to make renewable energies a familiar part of everyday life.
Sunfire’s Reversible Solid Oxide Cell (RSOC) makes it possible to bridge the gap between the energy sector and the chemicals and fuel sector. It unites a fuel cell and electrolyser in a single system and turns wind and solar energy into green hydrogen ready for conversion into chemicals and fuels by industrial companies and refineries. The RSOC also offers the added benefit of a fuel cell mode: If the electricity grid experiences a sudden spike in demand, it takes just a few minutes to switch over to fuel cell mode and use the RSOC to generate electricity.
